Henry Nunn was born in Herringswell in 1879,(Mildenhall Q4-1879 4A:594), son of Charles and Elizabeth NUNN (née WRIGHT).

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at Herringswell House, Herringswell with his father Charles NUNN [35] farm bailiff, born Fornham; his mother Elizabeth [36] born Thurston; sisters Elizabeth [8] born Fornham and Alice [6] born Herringswell and brother Charles [4] born Herringswell.

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at Herringswell House Farm with his parents and brother Henry.

1901 census...Aged 21, an estate agent's clerk, he was at Mr Image's Farm, Herringswell, with his parents

1911 census...Aged 31, single, estate clerk he was head of house at Holly Cottage, Herringswell, with his parents, father now retired.

In December 1916 he married (Bury St Edmund Q4-1916) Mary Eveline Jane THIERKILL later of Crown House, Highclere, Berkshire.



He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
The 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers appear to have been in the Arras-Vimy Ridge area in March 1917.
"Killed in Action..We very much regret to hear that Private Henry Nunn has lost his life while serving his King and Country on the Western Front. Henry Nunn was employed for many years in the Cavenham and Herringswell Estate Offices and married last October to a niece of Mrs Mawson of Cavenham. The sympathy of all who knew him will go out to the widow and his parents in their great trouble"...Bury Post `13th April 1917.

Extracts from the Bury Free Press of 28th April 1917 explain-
"it is with deep regret that we record the death of Lance Corporal Henry Nunn, second son of Mr C.Nunn of Tuddenham and late of Herringswell which took place in France on March 31st.
The deceased was in his 38th year and joined the Army on March 27th 1916, leaving England for France with the 1st Royal Fusiliers on December 7th, since when he had been in the trenches.
About the middle of March he contracted pneumonia and died in the ambulance train on the way to hospital from a sudden heart attack.
He was well known in the district especially in the villages of Cavenham and Herringswell where for the past 18 years he had been clerk in the estate offices of Mr.A B H Goldschmidt and the late Mr Leopold Davies by whom he was well liked and trusted.
On April 15th 1917, a memorial service was held in Tuddenham Church. The large congregation showed their respect in which the deceased was held and the kindly sympathy for the young widow and his bereaved parents".....

Henry Nunn is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, grave 22:D:11A
